Motherhood is a special feeling for women and it is considered a blessing, especially in countries like India. But few might have problems in conceiving naturally and hence they miss out on all the happiness that motherhood brings. There could be various reasons for infertility and each has a different solution in the medical field. One such solution that has become popular in India, in recent times, is IVF treatment. Let’s dive into more details of it.

What is IVF?

IVF is also referred to as In Vitro Fertilization treatment. In this procedure, the woman’s eggs are retrieved from the ovaries and fertilized with sperm in the laboratory. These fertilized eggs are then transferred back into the woman’s uterus. IVF is known as the most recommended treatment in case of infertility. Generally, the IVF treatment is prescribed to those who are facing issues with Endometriosis, Low sperm counts, Antibody problems, Ovulation problem, and low fallopian tubes.

There are various stages involved in the IVF procedure. The first stage includes suppressing the natural menstrual cycle. Here the patient is given certain medications to suppress the natural menstrual cycle. These are given as injections on a daily basis for around two weeks.

In the second stage, the patient would be given another set of injections for fertility hormone called follicle-stimulating hormone for up to 12 days. These injections help to increase the production of the number of eggs in the ovaries. Hence there are higher chances of multiple eggs getting fertilized. With multiple eggs, the clinic also gets a good number of choices for embryos to use in the treatment.

In the third stage, the experts will monitor your progress. Here the person would need to go through vaginal ultrasound scans to monitor the ovaries. Some patients are also asked to do certain blood tests.

In the fourth stage, the patient gets sedated and the eggs would be collected from the vagina. This overall procedure takes around 15 to 20 minutes. Few women experienced vaginal bleeding or minor cramps post this procedure.

In the fifth stage, the eggs are fertilized with male sperm and later transferred to the womb. Here they choose one or two best embryos for this purpose. Once the eggs are collected, the patient is given certain medications to prepare the lining of the womb. This helps to receive the embryo properly in the womb.

Here if the age of the women is less than 37 then only a single embryo gets transferred during the first cycle and second cycle. In the third cycle, they attempt for 2 embryos. If the women are aged between 37 to 39 years, then only a single embryo gets transferred during the first and second cycles. When it comes to women age between 40 to 42, they attempt double embryo transfer.
